AMBALGAN GOAT PROJECT THRIVING

16 Augustus 2008 Almost 2 years' ago, Taytayan Development Projects started an employment creation project in Ambalgan. Many young people are unemployed, mainly because they not have the money to fund further education, or because they are often discriminated against during interviews on account of their faith. Following a brainstorming session with the young people, the team decided to set up a goat project: a group of 13 young people received training to run and develop their own goat breeding station.

The project is now thriving. During the first year, there were many difficulties, mainly in terms of keeping the young people motivated, and to get them to come to the discovery that it was their project. One of Taytayan's first objectives is "ownership": that the young people themselves must feel accountable for the project (and for this to actually be the case). They may and must make the important decisions themselves about strategy and investments.

At the moment, things are going well with the project; the herd of goats is gradually increasing, and because various families are each responsible for a couple of goats, the load is distributed, and this seems to ensure a stable situation. The young people are gradually becoming to realise that this really is their project, which gives them self-confidence, and owing to which they are able to learn a lot.

There is still a long way to go before they can live totally from the project, but the developments are good!
